Tribute & Message From The Family

Beloved husband of 69 years to Elsie (nee Yazurlo). Loving father of Chris (Donna, nee Guzzo) and Paul. Dearest grandfather of Christopher Jr, Douglas and Dominique. Cherished brother of Angela DeMiglio (Hubert, both deceased). Uncle of many nieces and nephews.

"Mr. Carey", as he was affectionately addressed by his students, taught for 32 years at Hawken's Lower School Campus in Lyndhurst, Ohio. During his tenure, Len served under Four Headmasters and Three Acting Headmasters.

His Physical Education classes would end with a resounding "Hold Hands High and Two Claps" to cap off a successful lesson learned. His Red/Gray Interscholastic Track competition pitted students in each grade against one another and ended the day with a ribbon award ceremony and celebration for the entire student body.

Len was a WW II Navy Veteran who served in the South Pacific. After serving his country, he went on to graduate with a BS in Education from Kent State University in 1948.

He married his wife Elsie in the summer of 1949 and they were inseparable for 69 years until Len's passing. Before joining Hawken in 1956, he held several teaching positions and worked summers as a carpenter building homes to make ends meet. This became his hobby later on as he enjoyed woodworking in his spare time and drew plans and worked alongside subcontractors to build his retirement home after his retirement from Hawken in 1987.

Len's family was the cornerstone to his life. He loved his two boys Chris and Paul and always sacrificed on their behalf to guide them to do their best, just like the students he taught. His grandchildren, above all else, were the joy of his retirement years and made life grand. He couldn't be happier when they visited and always had activities planned for them upon their arrival.

He enjoyed returning to the Annual Hawken Winter Luncheon at the Upper School to meet with his former colleagues and students alike to reminisce. His final words at his retirement ceremony at Hawken ended like this, "This is a celebration then to show that we all made it in life. We can go on and shall. So please stand up and applaud for ourselves and each other. We Made It!" Indeed Len, You Made It!

Interment All Souls Cemetery. Mass of Christian Burial 10 am Monday at Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at THE FIORITTO FUNERAL HOME, 5236 MAYFIELD RD, LYNDHURST (E OF RICHMOND RD) 2-6 PM SUNDAY.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Leonard's name are suggested the educational charity of your choice.

To the family and friends of Leonard.

Sometimes words are not enough so I leave you with this visual. As Leonard took his last breath the LORD grabbed it. He than opened his arms and Leonard walked into them. The Lord wrapped his arms around him, walking him into his kingdom. When you are sad it may help to visualize this.

The Bereavement Ministry of Holy Angles is here for you all.
