Obituary

ALICE MARIE PHILLIPS was born June 26, 1930, in Columbus, Ohio, to Margaret Evelyn Brooks and Emmitt Phillips. Her family moved to California briefly in her toddler years and resettled in Cleveland, Ohio when she was six years old. Alice attended Cleveland Public Schools -
Bolton Elementary, Central Junior High, and graduated from John Hay High School for Girls in 1949.

In May 1950, she married Frank Norris Flynt of Fayetteville Tennessee. They had three children: Karen Tina, Donna Lynette and Eric Leighton.

She was an active member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church for many years until her health began to fail. She also supported Omega Baptist Church where Rev. Benjamin Finney and his wife Dollye Finney who were lifelong friends of the family officiated.

Both Alice and husband Frank were very involved in the civil rights movement in the late 1950s and 1960's, working diligently to elect Carl Stokes as the first Black Mayor of Cleveland. They were organizers of "Voice of the People", a grassroots community organization that worked to elect members of the Black community into local government positions; integrate neighborhoods and advocate for equality. They brought their children to civil rights marches and protests. They coordinated integration meetings between White and Black families who met for several weekly sessions to get to know each other. They along with two other families integrated the Collinwood neighborhood in 1962. Although not welcomed and threatened, they maintained their desire to give their children a better life and stayed. Eventually, she was the "Mom" of the street. She watched after children as they went to and from school; supervised homework if other moms were at work; corrected any behavior she felt was inappropriate; and wouldn't tell parents if they promised to straighten up! She served as president of the street club, and coordinated family street picnics and activities for kids – sometimes on the spur of the moment.

Alice enjoyed being involved in her children's PTA; was THE master at any type of crossword puzzle; she loved bingo, bus trips with friends and cruises to anywhere! Mostly, she enjoyed being with her family.

After raising her children, she worked for the May Company on Public Square. After that location closed, she retired for just five weeks and then worked for a number of years for the J.C. Penney Company, where she was a master jeweler in the fine jewelry department. She received many accolades for her knowledge of fine jewels and awards as their highest seller of gem stones.

She retired for the second time in 2003, and enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

In 2009, she suffered a stroke and developed Alzheimer's dementia. She lived at home with her family until she could no longer walk and needed 24-hour care. Alice departed this life peacefully on Sunday, August 26, 2018 just after noon. She was looking out her window that faced the patio, watching the birds and closed her eyes.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Frank Norris; her three children – daughters Karen Tina and Donna Lynette, son Eric Leighton and daughter-in-love Juliet; five beloved grandchildren – David Norris, Erika Jasmine, Brandon Charles, Adonna Zazi, and Bosch Logan; and two wonderful great granddaughters – Leilani and Lori Ann; special son Ted Ginn, Sr., and daughter-in-love Jeanette, and their children Tiffany and Ted, Jr. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, friends, colleagues, and many young folks who she considered her "adopted family""

"While our hearts are broken, our bond is forever strong! We love you Mom!

Lovingly Submitted, The Family
